Reminder for our Next Meeting on January 24, 2026
Meeting Introduction
In SMART Recovery, managing feelings is about understanding how emotions influence thoughts, decisions, and behaviors—and learning practical tools to respond to feelings in healthy, balanced ways rather than reacting impulsively. Feelings themselves are not the problem; it’s how we interpret and act on them that often leads to harmful choices. By developing awareness and emotional regulation skills, individuals can reduce emotional triggers and strengthen their ability to make intentional, values-based decisions.
SMART Recovery teaches that emotions are closely connected to beliefs and thoughts. Unhelpful beliefs—such as “I can’t handle this feeling” or “I need substances to cope”—can intensify emotions and lead to destructive behaviors. By identifying, questioning, and reframing these beliefs, people can change how they feel and respond. This cognitive approach empowers individuals to see feelings as temporary experiences rather than overwhelming forces.
Practical strategies for managing feelings include recognizing emotional triggers, labeling emotions accurately, practicing self-soothing techniques, and using rational thinking tools to challenge extreme or distorted thoughts. Techniques such as the ABC model (Activating event, Beliefs, Consequences), disputing unhelpful beliefs, and practicing acceptance help individuals tolerate discomfort and build resilience. Additionally, healthy habits—such as adequate sleep, balanced nutrition, exercise, social connection, and purposeful activities—play a crucial role in emotional stability.
Ultimately, managing feelings in SMART Recovery is about building emotional confidence and flexibility. Instead of trying to avoid or suppress emotions, individuals learn to accept feelings, understand their origins, and choose constructive responses. This process strengthens self-control, reduces reliance on addictive behaviors, and supports long-term recovery by aligning actions with personal values and goals.
